A C-section, or Caesarean section, is a surgical method used for delivering a baby. It’s sometimes required to ensure a safe delivery.
Although this procedure is safe for many women, it does come with certain risks and a longer stay in the hospital. Knowing more about this type of procedure can help ease your mind about what to expect if you end up needing one.
If you can’t have a vaginal birth or if your obstetrician determines that a vaginal birth is too much of a risk, you might need to have a C-section. Your obstetrician might schedule this procedure if you meet one of the following conditions:
Your obstetrician will make an incision in your abdomen and uterus to deliver your baby. As long as your baby isn’t having any problems at birth, you can hold him or her right away.
C-sections are a major surgery, so you can expect to receive anesthesia from the waist down to prevent you from feeling any pain. You might feel some pressure in this area, but you shouldn’t have any pain.
You’ll most likely stay in the hospital for a few days after your C-section.
You might have soreness, nausea, and other reactions right after surgery, which is normal. You might also feel tired, sore, and constipated for a few days or weeks.
In general, you should be able to resume normal activities in about eight weeks or less when your uterus is fully healed. Your obstetrician will provide you with information on the recovery process and let you know which kinds of activities to avoid.
If you need more information on C-sections, please contact Findlay Women’s Care to make an appointment with Dr. Carmen Doty-Armstrong, Dr. Dawn Hochstettler, or Dr. Kimberlee Perkins today.
