Endometriosis Q & A

What are the symptoms of endometriosis?

When you have endometriosis, you’re likely to have mild to severe pelvic pain that typically occurs with your period. You might have heavier bleeding during your period or bleeding that occurs between periods. Endometriosis can also cause you to have lower back pain or abdominal pain, especially during your period. You could experience pain during intercourse and pain when you urinate or have a bowel movement, as well.

Other symptoms that might occur include fatigue, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea.

Why do I have endometriosis?

Endometriosis occurs when you have tissue growth outside of your uterus instead of inside it. This tissue breaks down during your menstrual cycle, but it can’t leave your body as normal uterine tissue does. This can end up causing scar tissue to form on the surrounding tissue in this area. Your doctor at Findlay Women’s Care will evaluate your condition to find out what’s causing it.

What are the risk factors for endometriosis?

Your risk of having endometriosis is higher if you have any of the following risk factors:

  • Getting your first period early
  • Reaching menopause later than normal
  • Having short menstrual cycles
  • Having a low body mass index
  • Having estrogen levels that are higher than normal
  • Having abnormalities in your uterus
  • Consuming alcohol
  • Having family members with endometriosis

What problems can endometriosis cause?

Endometriosis can cause you to have fertility problems since it prevents the egg and sperm from joining. It can also cause damage to eggs or sperm, resulting in infertility. Having endometriosis might also raise your risk of having ovarian cancer, but this risk is low.

How can I manage endometriosis?

Your doctor will provide you with guidance on managing the symptoms of endometriosis. Your treatment options might include:

  • Over-the-counter pain relievers to ease menstrual pain
  • Hormone therapy, such as birth control pills or vaginal rings, to help prevent the growth of endometrial tissue
  • Laparoscopy to remove endometrial tissue, which is less invasive than traditional surgery
  • Hysterectomy to remove your uterus if all other treatment options are unsuccessful
  • Heating pad to relieve pain
  • Warm baths

If you need treatment for endometriosis, please contact Findlay Women’s Care to make an appointment with Dr. Carmen Doty-Armstrong, Dr. Dawn Hochstettler, or Dr. Kimberlee Perkins today.
