Having warts on or near your genitals might indicate a human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Certain strains of HPV can lead to a higher risk of cervical cancer, so it’s highly important to be tested for this virus and get treatment if needed. At Findlay Women’s Care, Dr. Carmen Doty-Armstrong, Dr. Dawn Hochstettler, and Dr. Kimberlee Perkins provide treatment for women in Findlay, Ohio who are at risk of HPV.

What are the symptoms of HPV infections?

You won’t always know if you have an HPV infection since it doesn’t cause symptoms in every case. If you have symptoms, you might have one or more of the following:

  • Genital warts
  • Warts on your hands, fingers, or other parts of your body
  • Flat warts that show up anywhere on your body
  • Plantar warts that grow on the bottom of your feet

What causes HPV infections?

You can get an HPV infection when you’ve been exposed to HPV, which typically occurs from skin-to-skin contact with someone who has this virus. The virus can infect your body through open wounds, such as if you accidentally touch warts on an infected person.

Do HPV infections lead to cancer?

Most strains of this virus don’t cause cancer, but certain ones can increase your risk of developing cervical cancer. If you have one of these strains, you most likely won’t notice any symptoms at first.

Pap smears, which your doctor at Findlay Women’s Care can do, will show signs of any HPV strains that are linked to cervical cancer. These symptoms typically include precancerous lesions.

How are HPV infections treated?

Warts caused by HPV infections go away on their own at times, but some require treatment. Your doctor at Findlay Women’s Care can recommend the best type of treatment plan for HPV symptoms. This might include one of the following:

  • Nonprescription products with salicylic acid
  • Prescription products that boost immune system function
  • Topical prescription products if you have genital warts
  • Chemical products that use heat to burn warts
  • Cryotherapy treatment to freeze warts
  • Surgery to remove warts
  • Laser treatments to remove warts

How can I reduce my risk of HPV infections?

Lowering your risk of exposure to HPV helps prevent infections. You can do this by covering your feet when you’re walking around locker rooms or public pools. Using condoms also protects you from this virus.

You can also get a vaccination against HPV, which protects you from strains that are linked to cervical cancer. Your doctor at Findlay Women’s Care will let you know if and when you should get HPV vaccinations.

If you need treatment, testing, or vaccines for HPV, please contact Findlay Women’s Care to schedule an appointment with Dr. Carmen Doty-Armstrong, Dr. Dawn Hochstettler, or Dr. Kimberlee Perkins.
