Your gynecologist at Findlay Women’s Care might recommend a hysterectomy as a treatment option if you’re having severe pain or other symptoms and you’ve tried other forms of treatment without success. Findlay Women's Care uses this treatment for different gynecological conditions, including the following:
It’s a minimally invasive procedure that involves removing your uterus through smaller incisions instead of large ones.
Traditional hysterectomies involve making one or more large incisions, leading to more discomfort afterward, a longer recovery period, and a higher risk of complications, such as damage to surrounding tissue.
Laparoscopic hysterectomies involve making a few small incisions and using tiny surgical instruments to remove the uterus. If needed, you can also have your ovaries and cervix removed during this procedure.
Having a laparoscopic hysterectomy offers some substantial benefits compared to traditional hysterectomies. These include:
Your gynecologist at Findlay Women’s Care first administers general anesthesia, so you don’t experience any pain or discomfort.
After ensuring you’re sufficiently numb, they make small incisions in your abdominal area and then inserts a tiny camera and instruments through these incisions to take out your uterus. Your gynecologist watches the camera to view the surgical site.
This can vary from person to person depending on certain factors, but in general, you should limit your activities for one or two weeks after a laparoscopic hysterectomy. That helps ensure that your body heals properly and lowers your risk of slowing down the healing process. That's much shorter than the recovery time of four to six weeks for traditional hysterectomies.
Your gynecologist gives you detailed information on your recovery, including caring for your incisions, and she will let you know which activities are safe to do.
If you need more information on hysterectomies, please contact Findlay Women’s Care to schedule an appointment with Dr. Carmen Doty-Armstrong, Dr. Dawn Hochstettler, or Dr. Kimberlee Perkins today.
