Incontinence Q & A

Findlay Women's Care

What are the symptoms of urinary incontinence?

When you have urinary incontinence, you might experience loss of bladder control at certain times. There are different kinds of incontinence you can experience, such as:

  • Stress incontinence that causes you to leak urine from too much pressure on your bladder, such as when you cough
  • Overflow incontinence that causes a persistent flow of urine
  • Urge incontinence that causes severe urges to urinate all of a sudden
  • Functional incontinence if you have a condition that makes it hard for you to get to the bathroom soon enough

Why do I have urinary incontinence?

You can have short-term incontinence from certain foods and beverages, such as coffee or alcohol. You might also have a temporary loss of bladder control if you have a urinary tract infection or if you’re constipated. If you have persistent incontinence, any one of the following could be the cause:

  • Age-related changes in your bladder muscle
  • Menopausal changes that weaken your bladder lining
  • Prolapsed pelvic floor from childbirth
  • Hysterectomy that leads to pelvic floor damage
  • Underlying medical conditions that affect your nervous system, such as multiple sclerosis

What problems can urinary incontinence cause?

In addition to causing embarrassment or self-consciousness in public, incontinence can also increase your risk of having urinary tract infections. You might also be more prone to develop skin rashes or skin infections from your skin being damp due to urine leakage. Your doctor will discuss possible problems that incontinence can cause to help determine the most suitable form of treatment for you.

How can I manage urinary incontinence?

Your doctor will discuss treatment options for incontinence with you to help reduce loss of bladder control. Some of these treatments include:

  • Bladder training to get you used to holding urine when you have the urge to go
  • Limiting caffeine, alcohol, and other foods and beverages that can trigger incontinence
  • Pelvic floor muscle exercises to help make this muscle stronger
  • Medications for calming overactive bladders or relaxing your bladder muscle
  • Medical devices, such as a urethral insert
  • Sling procedure to keep your urethra closed, which helps prevent incontinence
  • Burch procedure that involves attaching your vaginal wall to a ligament next to your pubic bone

If you need treatment for incontinence, please contact Findlay Women’s Care to make an appointment with Dr. Carmen Doty-Armstrong, Dr. Dawn Hochstettler, or Dr. Kimberlee Perkins.
