Traditional or open surgical procedures involve large incisions, which increase the risk of scarring and complications, such as excessive bleeding and infections. This type of surgery also has a longer recovery time and requires a longer hospital stay.
Laparoscopic procedures involve smaller incisions, resulting in shorter recovery times, less soreness, and fewer risks. Your gynecologist at Findlay Women’s Care might recommend laparoscopy if you need surgery.
At Findlay Women’s Care, your gynecologist might recommend one of the following laparoscopic procedures after evaluating your condition:
During your procedure, your gynecologist makes a small incision and places a tiny camera inside it. This camera provides your gynecologist with a view of the surgical site for diagnostic or treatment purposes.
Your gynecologist then makes another incision and places tiny surgical instruments inside it to treat your condition. Depending on the type of procedure you have, this might involve removing your uterus, uterine fibroids, endometrial tissue, or pelvic masses.
Your recovery period should be shorter than it would be after open surgery. The exact time it takes depends on the type of procedure you’re having and the severity of your condition.
You might need to limit certain activities until your gynecologist tells you it’s safe to resume them. That gives your body time to heal without placing any strain on it that could affect healing.
Your gynecologist will give you detailed instructions on caring for your incisions after surgery. That involves keeping them clean, which helps reduce the risk of infections.
If you notice redness, pain, discharge, or other signs of an infection, contact your gynecologist right away. You’ll need to let your body rest and restrict some activities for about a week or two after laparoscopy. Your gynecologist will let you know when it’s safe to resume them.
If you need more information on laparoscopy, please contact Findlay Women’s Care to set up an appointment with Dr. Carmen Doty-Armstrong, Dr. Dawn Hochstettler, or Dr. Kimberlee Perkins today.
