Menopause usually occurs when women are in their 50s, but you can reach it in your 40s. Keep in mind that you don’t officially reach menopause until you’ve gone without a period for one year.
Leading up to that point, it’s common to experience several years of perimenopause. During these years, you’re likely to have one or more symptoms due to all of the changes occurring in your body.

While your body approaches menopause, many changes occur that affect you both emotionally and physically.
For example, your levels of estrogen and progesterone hormones begin to decrease, which can start to happen as early as your late 30s or early 40s. That can lead to irregular periods, hot flashes, mood swings, and other menopause symptoms.
Menopause itself shouldn’t cause any health issues, but it can raise your risk of having certain problems, such as high cholesterol and heart disease. Dryness and irritation in your vagina can lead to sexual problems, while changes in your bones can increase your risk of osteoporosis. You might also have a higher risk of urinary incontinence and urinary tract infections.
Your gynecologist at Findlay Women’s Care recommends treatment based on your symptoms and their severity. Your treatment options might include the following:
