Menopause Q & A

Findlay Women's Care

When will I go through menopause?

Menopause usually occurs when women are in their 50s, but you can reach it in your 40s. Keep in mind that you don’t officially reach menopause until you’ve gone without a period for one year.

Leading up to that point, it’s common to experience several years of perimenopause. During these years, you’re likely to have one or more symptoms due to all of the changes occurring in your body.

What are common symptoms of menopause?

As you get closer to menopause, you might experience different symptoms. Some of these symptoms might come and go, while others might be more persistent. Some common symptoms include:

  • Hot flashes
  • Mood swings and other emotional changes
  • Irregular periods
  • Vaginal irritation
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Abdominal weight gain rather than weight gain in the hips and thighs
  • Thinning hair
  • Night sweats

What causes menopause symptoms?

While your body approaches menopause, many changes occur that affect you both emotionally and physically.

For example, your levels of estrogen and progesterone hormones begin to decrease, which can start to happen as early as your late 30s or early 40s. That can lead to irregular periods, hot flashes, mood swings, and other menopause symptoms.

Does menopause cause health problems?

Menopause itself shouldn’t cause any health issues, but it can raise your risk of having certain problems, such as high cholesterol and heart disease. Dryness and irritation in your vagina can lead to sexual problems, while changes in your bones can increase your risk of osteoporosis. You might also have a higher risk of urinary incontinence and urinary tract infections.

How are menopause symptoms treated?

Your gynecologist at Findlay Women’s Care recommends treatment based on your symptoms and their severity. Your treatment options might include the following:

  • Hormone therapy to boost your estrogen levels and relieve menopause symptoms
  • Topical estrogen to ease vaginal dryness and irritation
  • MonaLisa Touch® for treating vaginal dryness using CO2 laser energy to stimulate collagen production
  • Bioidentical hormones that come from plant sources to increase estrogen levels
  • Exercises for making your pelvic floor muscles stronger to treat incontinence and other bladder problems

If you need help managing menopause symptoms, please contact Findlay Women’s Care to set up an appointment with Dr. Carmen Doty-Armstrong, Dr. Dawn Hochstettler, or Dr. Kimberlee Perkins.
