Nexplanon is known as implant birth control since your doctor implants it in your upper arm in a discreet spot. While you have this implant in your arm, it gives off hormones that prevent your eggs from leaving your ovaries and stop sperm from getting to your eggs.
You don’t have to worry about others seeing the device. Your doctor will place Nexplanon in an area that’s not visible.
Nexplanon is safe for many women, but you might not be able to have it if you have certain conditions, such as:
You should also let your doctor know if you have any underlying medical conditions, such as high cholesterol, diabetes, kidney problems, or high blood pressure.
Although it doesn’t protect against STDs, Nexplanon is among the most-effective types of birth control available. In fact, it’s considered more than 99 percent effective, making it a more reliable form of birth control than birth control pills, skin patches, and diaphragms. Furthermore, since it’s an implant, you don’t run the risk of forgetting to take a daily birth control pill.
Your doctor will numb the skin in the area where your implant will be inserted, then use an applicator to slide this rod-shaped implant under your skin. After they insert it, your doctor will feel for it to make sure it’s in there correctly. You’ll need to wear a pressure bandage on your arm for 24 hours, then switch to a smaller bandage for up to five days while you heal.
When you have Nexplanon, you might experience changes in your menstrual cycle, such as heavier or lighter bleeding or shorter or longer cycles. Other possible side effects include the following:
