These are tests that your gynecologist at Findlay Women’s Care does to check for cervical abnormalities. Your gynecologist sends your test to a lab, and it’s evaluated for precancerous lesions, cells, or other possible signs of cervical cancer.
Since early detection and diagnosis improves your chance of successfully treating this disease, it’s important to have a Pap smear as often as your gynecologist recommends.
Women over 21 years of age should have a Pap smear done about every three to five years. However, your gynecologist might recommend them more often if you’re at a higher risk of having cervical cancer.
Try to have your Pap smear done during a time when you’re not on your period, or you might end up needing to reschedule it.
You should stop using vaginal products, such as creams or lotions, at least two days before your Pap smear. That helps ensure that you’ll get accurate results on your test.
Your gynecologist will let you know if you need to do anything else before your appointment.
It’s common to feel very mild discomfort during a Pap smear, but you shouldn’t have any serious pain. Your gynecologist at Findlay Women’s Care will carefully put a speculum inside your vagina to open it more, then remove a tiny sample of cervical tissue.
This test usually only takes a minute or two to do. Afterward, your tissue sample goes to a lab for analysis, and your gynecologist will discuss the results with you.
Keep in mind that you might experience slight cramping and spotting or bleeding after your Pap smear, which is considered normal.
It depends on the amount of time the lab takes analyzing your tissue sample. In general, Pap smear results are ready anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks. If your results are abnormal, your gynecologist will ask you to come in for an appointment to discuss them and set up additional testing if needed.
If you’re due for a Pap smear, please contact Findlay Women’s Care to set up an appointment with Dr. Carmen Doty-Armstrong, Dr. Dawn Hochstettler, or Dr. Kimberlee Perkins today.
