PCOS Q & A

Findlay Women's Care

What are the symptoms of PCOS?

When you have PCOS, you might have symptoms that started as early as when you got your first period. However, PCOS symptoms can also start when you’re older. Common symptoms of this condition, which can become worse if you put on too much weight, include the following:

  • Menstrual cycles that are too long or too short
  • Periods that stop for four or more months
  • Periods that last longer than normal and have either very light or very heavy bleeding
  • Adult acne, facial hair, and other signs of androgen levels that are higher than normal
  • Ovaries that are larger than normal and have several sacs filled with fluid

Why do I have PCOS?

When you have PCOS, your ovaries have numerous fluid-filled sacs, which show up on imaging tests. You might have a higher risk of developing this condition if you have family members with PCOS or low-grade inflammation that causes excess androgen production. Your risk of PCOS might also be higher if you have too much insulin in your bloodstream, which can boost androgen production.

Your doctor at Findlay Women’s Care will try to determine what might be causing PCOS and recommend ways to manage it.

What problems can PCOS cause?

PCOS can raise your risk of having certain medical conditions, especially if you’re overweight or obese. These conditions include the following:

  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol levels
  • Sleep apnea
  • Infertility
  • Endometrial cancer due to exposure to high estrogen levels

How can I manage PCOS?

You can keep the symptoms of PCOS under control and reduce your risk of experiencing complications in many ways. Your doctor might recommend the following:

  • Medication for regulating your menstrual cycle, such as hormonal birth control pills or a vaginal ring
  • Medication for ovulation if you’re trying to conceive
  • Birth control pills with estrogen to combat the effects of too much androgen
  • Weight loss if you’re overweight or obese
  • More complex carbs and fewer simple carbs in your diet to keep your insulin levels under control
  • Regular physical activity to lower your blood sugar levels

If you need treatment for PCOS, please contact Findlay Women’s Care to schedule an appointment with Dr. Carmen Doty-Armstrong, Dr. Dawn Hochstettler, or Dr. Kimberlee Perkins.
