Uterine Fibroids Q & A

Findlay Women's Care

What are the symptoms of uterine fibroids?

You might not experience any noticeable symptoms of uterine fibroids, especially if you have small ones or only a couple of them. Depending on where your fibroids are, how large they are, and how many you have, you might end up experiencing the following symptoms:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Heavy bleeding during your period
  • Periods that last longer than one week
  • Trouble completely emptying your bladder
  • Back pain or leg pain
  • Constipation
  • Frequent need to urinate

Why do I have uterine fibroids?

Uterine fibroids grow in and around your uterus. They’re non-cancerous growths that can develop due to genetic changes or hormonal changes, such as increases in estrogen. You might also get them if you have a family history of uterine fibroids or if you use birth control that contains estrogen.

These growths vary regarding how quickly they develop, and they sometimes shrink, such as when you experience a decrease in estrogen.

What problems can uterine fibroids cause?

While these growths aren’t cancerous, they can end up causing pelvic pain and other uncomfortable symptoms. You might also develop anemia if you lose a lot of blood during your periods. Fibroids might make it harder for you to become pregnant or increase your risk of complications during pregnancy. Your doctor will discuss potential problems with uterine fibroids during your visit.

How can I manage uterine fibroids?

You might not need any treatment if your fibroids aren’t causing any noticeable symptoms. If you do need treatment, your doctor at Findlay Women’s Care might recommend one or more of the following:

  • Medications that lower estrogen and progesterone levels, causing fibroids to shrink
  • Intrauterine devices with progesterone for easing heavy bleeding
  • Nonprescription pain relievers for pelvic pain
  • Uterine artery embolization that cuts off blood flow to uterine fibroids and causes them to die
  • Laparoscopic myomectomy that involves surgically removing fibroids with a minimally invasive technique
  • Hysterectomy if other treatment options haven’t been effective

Can I prevent uterine fibroids from coming back?

There’s no proven way to prevent the growth of uterine fibroids, but you can do certain things to lower your risk of having them. Your doctor will provide you with information on the most-effective ways to do this, such as losing excess weight and following a healthy diet.

If you need treatment for uterine fibroids, please contact Findlay Women’s Care to schedule an appointment with Dr. Carmen Doty-Armstrong, Dr. Dawn Hochstettler, or Dr. Kimberlee Perkins.
