You might not experience any noticeable symptoms of uterine fibroids, especially if you have small ones or only a couple of them. Depending on where your fibroids are, how large they are, and how many you have, you might end up experiencing the following symptoms:
Uterine fibroids grow in and around your uterus. They’re non-cancerous growths that can develop due to genetic changes or hormonal changes, such as increases in estrogen. You might also get them if you have a family history of uterine fibroids or if you use birth control that contains estrogen.
These growths vary regarding how quickly they develop, and they sometimes shrink, such as when you experience a decrease in estrogen.
While these growths aren’t cancerous, they can end up causing pelvic pain and other uncomfortable symptoms. You might also develop anemia if you lose a lot of blood during your periods. Fibroids might make it harder for you to become pregnant or increase your risk of complications during pregnancy. Your doctor will discuss potential problems with uterine fibroids during your visit.
You might not need any treatment if your fibroids aren’t causing any noticeable symptoms. If you do need treatment, your doctor at Findlay Women’s Care might recommend one or more of the following:
There’s no proven way to prevent the growth of uterine fibroids, but you can do certain things to lower your risk of having them. Your doctor will provide you with information on the most-effective ways to do this, such as losing excess weight and following a healthy diet.
If you need treatment for uterine fibroids, please contact Findlay Women’s Care to schedule an appointment with Dr. Carmen Doty-Armstrong, Dr. Dawn Hochstettler, or Dr. Kimberlee Perkins.
