Yeast infections cause itching and other symptoms that can lead to severe discomfort. Although having a yeast infection once or twice is considered normal, having recurring infections isn’t and typically requires long-term care. At Findlay Women’s Care, Dr. Carmen Doty-Armstrong, Dr. Dawn Hochstettler, and Dr. Kimberlee Perkins provide treatment for women in Findlay, Ohio who have yeast infections.

Yeast Infections Q & A

What are the symptoms of a yeast infection?

When you have a yeast infection, you might experience one or more of the following symptoms, which can be mild or severe. Keep in mind that severe symptoms usually occur with complicated or recurring yeast infections.

  • Vaginal itching
  • Vaginal irritation
  • Burning feeling when urinating
  • Vaginal discharge that’s thick, has a whitish color, and no odor
  • Swelling and redness in the vulva
  • Pain or burning during intercourse

Why do I have a yeast infection?

You can get yeast infections when you have too much vaginal yeast. Your vagina normally has a healthy balance of bacteria and yeast, but underlying health issues and certain medications can cause higher levels of yeast. These include:

  • Taking antibiotics that destroy healthy bacteria in your vagina
  • Having poorly managed diabetes
  • Being pregnant
  • Having a compromised immune system
  • Taking birth control pills that contain estrogen
  • Undergoing hormone therapy that increases estrogen levels

Your doctor at Findlay Women’s Care will determine the cause of your infection and recommend the right treatment for it.

How are mild yeast infections treated?

If you have a mild infection or rarely get infections, treatment options typically include prescription antifungal medications in oral, ointment, or cream form. Your doctor might recommend using over-the-counter antifungal suppositories or other products instead, especially if you’re pregnant.

Prescription and over-the-counter treatments usually clear up yeast infections within a week. If you still have symptoms after this time, you should see your doctor at Findlay Women’s Care for a follow-up visit.

How are recurring or complicated yeast infections treated?

If you have frequent or severe infections, your doctor might recommend a prescription vaginal product, such as a cream or suppository, that contains azole. These can take up to two weeks to clear up infections.

Other treatment options include fluconazole oral medication and maintenance therapy to reduce the risk of recurring yeast infections.

How can I prevent yeast infections?

You can lower your risk of yeast infections by doing the following:

  • Avoid wearing tight underwear and pants
  • Choose cotton underwear, which is more breathable than other materials
  • Don’t leave damp or wet clothes on
  • Don’t take antibiotics for viral illnesses

If you need treatment for a yeast infection, please contact Findlay Women’s Care to schedule an appointment with Dr. Carmen Doty-Armstrong, Dr. Dawn Hochstettler, or Dr. Kimberlee Perkins today.
