Hysterectomy

Uterine fibroids, endometriosis, and other gynecological problems cause severe discomfort and other issues with your periods. When these problems don't improve with conventional treatment methods, Dr. Doty-Armstrong might recommend a hysterectomy. At Findlay Women's Care, Dr. Carmen Doty-Armstrong offers minimally-invasive hysterectomies with laparoscopic surgery and the daVinci robotic surgical system.

When do I need a hysterectomy?

Dr. Doty-Armstrong might recommend a hysterectomy as a treatment option if you're having severe pain or other symptoms, and you've tried other forms of treatment without success. Hysterectomy might be necessary for different gynecologic conditions, including:

  • Endometriosis

  • Uterine fibroids

  • Uterine prolapse

  • Uterine cancer

  • Ovarian cancer

  • Cervical cancer

What is a laparoscopic hysterectomy?

It's a minimally-invasive procedure that involves removing your uterus through a smaller incision instead of a larger one. Traditional hysterectomies involve making one or more large incisions, leading to more discomfort and a longer recovery time. Laparoscopic hysterectomies involve making a few small incisions and using tiny surgical instruments to remove the uterus. If needed, you can also have your ovaries and cervix removed during this procedure.

What are the benefits of a laparoscopic hysterectomy?

Having a laparoscopic hysterectomy offers some substantial benefits compared to traditional hysterectomies. These include:

  • Less chance of scarring

  • Less discomfort during recovery

  • Lower risks of infections, bleeding, and damage to surrounding tissue

  • Shorter recovery time
